Autumn Teaching Activities for Your Preschooler

It’s that time of year again! The leaves are changing color, the air is getting cooler, and pumpkins are everywhere. If you’re like most parents, you’re probably wondering how to explain autumn to your preschooler.

Lit’l Scholars Learning Centers has been offering childcare solutions in Salt Lake City for 20 years. And we believe in supporting the whole child through activities and opportunities that allow them to Learn, Explore, and Grow. What better way to help your preschooler understand the fall season than through experience?

Here are some fun activities you can do with your little one to help them understand and enjoy the change of seasons.

Visit a Pumpkin Patch

Pumpkins are synonymous with autumn, so what better way to celebrate the season than by taking a trip to a local pumpkin patch? Most pumpkin patches have a variety of activities for kids of all ages, so your preschooler will be sure to have a blast.

Many pumpkin patches also offer hayrides, story times, and other fun events. And of course, there’s always the excitement of picking out the perfect pumpkin! So, if you’re looking for a fun-filled activity for your preschooler, be sure to check out your local pumpkin patch.

Make Some Autumn-Themed Crafts

As the leaves begin to change color and the air grows cooler, preschoolers across the country get excited about all things autumn. And what preschooler doesn’t love a good craft project? Here are a few great ideas for Autumn-themed crafts that your preschooler is sure to enjoy.

One simple but fun craft project is to create a collage of fall leaves.

Collect leaves of different sizes, colors, and shapes, then help your child glue them onto a piece of construction paper. If you live in an area with a lot of trees, this is also a great opportunity to teach your child about the different types of leaves that exist.

Another fun craft idea is to make homemade crayons.

This is a great way to use up those old bits and pieces of broken crayons that are taking up space in your utensil drawer. Simply melt the crayons down (either in the microwave or in a double boiler), then pour the wax into molds in the shape of leaves, acorns, or pumpkins.

Let the crayons cool and harden, then let your child go to town coloring with their new art supplies!

Pumpkin painting.

Finally, no list of Salt Lake City preschool Autumn crafts would be complete without mentioning pumpkin painting. This classic fall activity is always a hit with little ones. You can either purchase small pumpkins from your local grocery store or find some mini pumpkins at a farmer’s market.

Set up a painting station outdoors, then let your child go wild creating their own jack-o-lantern masterpiece. Add some googly eyes and voila – you’ve got an adorable decoration for your front porch!

Go on a Nature Hike

One of the best things about autumn is the gorgeous weather. Take advantage of it by going on a nature hike with your preschooler. As you walk, point out the different changes in the leaves and explain why they happen.

Who knows? You might even spot some wildlife! Just be sure to dress your child in comfortable clothes and shoes since they’ll likely want to run around and explore.

Autumn is a wonderful time of year, and there are lots of great ways to celebrate it with your preschooler. From visiting a pumpkin patch to going on a nature hike, these activities will help your little ones understand and enjoy the change of seasons.

So, get out there and enjoy the cool weather while it lasts!
